The use of organo-clays for hydrocarbon sorption has been widely studied (15-17). Organo-clays are formed when large hydrophobic quaternary ammonium compounds are exchanged onto 2:1 layer silicates (18, 19). The exchanged cations are usually tetramethylammonium (TMA) and trimethylphenylammonium (TMPA) for organo-clays and alkyl hydrocarbon groups

The organo-clays were prepared by adding appropriate aliquots of the surfactant solutions to the Mt dispersion at room temperature. The surfactant concentration was changed in the range 2.0·10-4 –3.0·10 -2 g cm -3 while the amount of Mt was kept constant at 30 g dm -3.
