Owned the steam mill at The Granary as well as Flatford Water Mill 1878 – he put the Flatford estate (including both mills) on the market – at that time the water mill was described as having 8 pairs of stones while the steam mill had 3 pairs.

Summary This is a preparatory study for Flatford Mill ('Scene on a Navigable River') (1816-17, Tate Gallery N01273 ), which was largely painted outdoors in the artist's native Suffolk. The drawing is a pencil tracing of an image made with a brush on a sheet of glass held on an easel in front of the subject itself.

John Constable, one of the foremost landscape painters of the nineteenth century, was invited to paint this small landscape and a larger companion picture, Wivenhoe Park, Essex (National Gallery of Art, Washington DC), by his patron and friend Major General Francis Slater Rebow, in the late summer of 1816.

'Flatford Mill', as it is generally called today, was the forerunner of the series of six-foot canvases of river subjects which Constable began exhibiting in 1819. He had already shown a river landscape of the same size as 4 - 'Landscape: Boys fishing' in 1813 1 - but this did not depict the working life of the Stour.
