I used a mill-drill exactly once...but comparing the two mentally I don't think you're going to get any improvement in rigidity, mass, etc. That said, the Z-knee is a nice feature. The main gain in the Clausing (wonderful machine BTW, my Dad has one) is as stated, small footprint and easily moved into the basement without cutting the house apart.

You can buy used Bridgeports in good condition well within that range. Buying a machine tool new is like buying a car new--it almost never makes financial sense. Only do that if you have much more money than time. (I also lust after the Clausing 8540--if anyone has one for sale in the New England area, let me know.)

The Clausing 8530 mill is in very good condition for its age. Both machines include a ton of tooling and upgrades, i am happy to share pics and discuss the machines and tooling included with serious buyers. PM me if you are interested. Price is $8,000 for the machines and all tooling included.

I have a Model 8530 that I would not part with . It is a small vertical Mill. It has a power feed on its X axis. Its predecessor, the Model # 8520 has all manual feeds.

Besides Rockwell and Clausing, add Burke Millrite to your list. The are also Hardinge horizontal mills that often have vertical heads added which end up being similar sized. Having said all this, I ended up getting a Chinese mill, an Enco 100-1525, it was a 1990 machine that was nearly new sitting in an old gent's garage.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions. I recently bought a Clausing 8520 Milling Machine. It has a 1hp/3-phase 1725 RPM motor with a 2-step 1.5/3.5" pulley driving an intermediate 4-step pulley which drives a 4-step pulley on the spindle. I don't have any reference which translates these into RPM, but of course, could calculate.

The machine is beautiful. There isn't a mark on the table. Unfortunately the quill handle disappeared somewhere along the 150 mile ride home. Clausing still has so.e parts, but they are $$$, so making one will likely be one of my first jobs with it. The power feed works as it should (after some adjustment). And the machine feels nice and tight.

I've owned an 8620 Clausing since 1976. Was like new when I got it, and it has been a great little machine. It has it's limits though. Changing speeds is a painful, slow process, and oiling it is time consuming, and the oil does not stay put very long. The #2 Morse is OK up to 1/2", but you can get adaptors to hold bigger cutters.
