The typical Sieg X2 mini-mill [HF 44991, Grizzly G8689, Micro-Mark & others] has a lot of backlash in the Z-axis.In my case it was .053-inches, which was almost a full turn of the fine-adjust knob. I heard that putting a shim behind the rack on the column would help by causing it to mesh tighter with the pinion gear in the head.

I don't have the mill, but I do have a Sieg 7x12 lathe. I built two Form 1 suppressors on it and while it worked fine for the aluminum .22 can I was REALLY pushing it on the stainless .308 one. For cutting harder materials, especially ones that work harden, it has two drawbacks - it can't take very deep cuts, and it's not real stiff.

The air spring head support gives it more Z-axis travel than most other mini mills. Grizzly Industrial, Inc. sells the Grizzly model G8689 mini mill.

The SIEG X2D Mini Mill has drill press handles for drilling and fast motion of the mill's head. It also has Z-axis fine feed with 0.001" resolution for milling operations. Few years later I got Mini Mill from Harbor Freight - a variation of Sieg X2 mill. These two machines are very good when tuned well. I was able to achieve the precision of 0.001inch what is enough for my needs. When the mill arrived to my shop it was mostly assembled but I decides to take it apart, clean, lubricate and adjust the way I wanted.
