We used surface grinders to do all the slide to frame fits back in the day. Started with a .250 wheel and cut them down to .050 on surface grinder, if I remember, to fit inside frame rails. Did thousands of 1911s and 2011s over several years this way. No better way to get a very smooth and straight, tight fit.

I used a stone surface grinder 50 yrs ago where I worked and from my memories it's not the best for most knife work. From my memory the stone SG is best for really precision work in the tenth of a thou range. But it's slow, I don't remember ever taking .005" at a pass. The saws frames even the big monsters like my are pretty limber.I haven't checked but my gut feeling is that there is atleast .005" deflection from just the weight of the saw head moving over the arm.Since .001" is a fair pass on a surface grinder I think t would be a waste of time trying unless you made serious mods to the saw.
