I've got 2 mills and will eventually build a power drawbar for the 2nd (CNC'd) mill that is integrated with the belt drive components. Meanwhile, food for thought: Guts of a Kurt power drawbar are built on a Chicago Pneumatic butterfly impact wrench.

This power drawbar has been fitted to my RF45 mill, which again myself and my friend converted to cnc about a year ago. Anyone thinking about a power drawbar may want to look into using one of these motors, as the power they have is unreal !! my friend actually took away the other motor to make himself a power broaching press.

I've wondered about a permanent electric version by gutting an e-wrench, hook up DC power, remote switch etc. But still have to solve how to disengage during long stretches of mill running, either mechanically or electrically. Also sometimes my drawbar still needs a light tap to disengage the quill seat even with drawbar unthreaded.

So building the power draw bar was a must have deal. It was putting me through immense pain undoing, and doing up the drawbar. The drawbar manufacturers would love a simpler cheaper mechanism, if only one would work. Yet they keep shipping impact wrench based systems for R8, or special patented tricks like Mach1. Another modification to the power drawbar. I found that it was too easy to move the handle to one side or the other as the only resistance is the tiny springs in the impact air valves. I added a flat plate and 2 springs that keep the handle in the center position and require more effort to run the impact.

You have to give the drawbar a good rap to knock the tool out. I assumed that power drawbars had a vertical limit which would effectively do the same thing. e.g. after a few CCW turns, the power drawbar stops moving up / draw bar can't move up any further, thus the unscrewing motion ends up pushing the R8 adapter down and out of the spindle.

Well, I'm happy to report the power drawbar seems to work *perfectly*! I got it all plumbed and wired, and did the 20 or so lines of macro code to make it work, and it grabbed, and released, the tools 25-30 times in a row, without so much as a single hiccup!
