CNC End Mill Comparison Guide | MatterHackers
They cut best using the side of the mill, so most cutting software will slowly ramp the end mill down into the material, rather than a simple plunge. With fishtail end mills, you will have nice square corners at the bottom of any inset section of geometry and a smooth, flat surface anywhere it passes over the top of.

The Complete Guide to Plunge Milling and Roughing
This may require flat-bottom tooling such as end mills or twist drills that are specially made for Plunge Milling. Not the Best Under Favorable Conditions: Plunge milling is not a general-purpose strategy that replaces all other strategies. It's best use is when you need plunge milling's advantages: more rigidity and less power required.

End mills can have 2 to 5 or more flutes. For metal cutting 4 flute cutters are normally used. End mills produce a cut with a flat bottom; so called "centre-cutting" end mills can be used for plunge cutting (the tool moves vertically into the workpiece to a desired depth). Under "normal" working conditions an end mill is moved in either ...

The down-cut end mill is the reverse by puching the chips downward and the top of the material is smooth. The compression end mill creates a smooth surface on top and bottom, which is perfect for pre-laminated woods. End mills come in a variety of shapes. The most common are flat end mills and ball end mills. Flat end mills will cut flat areas ...
Flat bottom end mills or center cutting spot face?
Actually we have been circle milling them on a CNC but it is slower and leaves a burr. When we plunge them with an end mill, it is 3-4 times faster with no burr. But the non-flat surface creates other problems. There are 16 per part, 100's of parts a month.

Is It Right to Use End Mill Drilling Hole? - Meetyou ...
End mill's cutting part is wrapped around flutes, which are a bunch of helical grooves on side of end mills. Each flute is with a sharp edge at least. While you can't see this kind of component on drill bits cause they merely use the edges on its top area instead of lateral cutting edge to drill down and evacuate chips.

Best way to make a 16mm flat-bottom hole in steel bar ...
End mills aren't really designed for plunge cuts, so I'm not sure that would work well. If you really have no other options, drill to depth in the middle of the hole, with, say, a 14 mm bit. This will give a space in the middle for chips to fall into, for the majority of the cut, and make it much easier for the final cut.

plunge with endmill or drill and then plunge
The flat bottom holes are nothing critical, only clearance for a bolt head. I have been a machinist for over 30 years but this was on manual machines such as cincinnati verticals and g&L horizontal boring mills. On these machines I would put in 1 1/4" flat bottom holes using a 1 1/4" 2 flute high speed endmill and just plunge it right in.
